Congress is rushing to pass the SAVE America Act–legislation Republicans say is necessary to protect American elections.
But there’s a basic question worth asking: What problem is this bill actually trying to solve?
Today in The Messina Memo, TMG Partner Lindsey Kerr takes a closer look.
Before joining TMG, Lindsey served as Chief of Staff to Senator Amy Klobuchar. Prior to that, Lindsey was Staff Director and Chief Counsel of the Senate Rules Committee, where she worked on bipartisan efforts to strengthen election security after the 2016 election.
Drawing on that experience, she explains why the evidence shows non-citizen voting is vanishingly rare, and why the SAVE America Act does nothing to address the real vulnerabilities facing American elections.
Instead, the bill risks creating new barriers to the ballot without making elections any safer.
If a law makes voting harder without making elections safer, what exactly is it protecting?
